José Rino holds a degree in Technological Physics Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico and a PhD in Biophysics from University of Lisbon. His research career began at the lab of Prof. Carmo-Fonseca at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM), where he developed and applied quantitative microscopy methods to study nuclear proteins dynamics and interactions in mRNA biogenesis.
Since 2009, José has led advanced imaging facilities in Portugal, serving as Head of the Bioimaging Unit at iMM and, between 2013 and 2016, as responsible for the Optical Imaging and Microscopy Platform at the Champalimaud Foundation.
In 2016 José was also appointed by the IMM as Head of the Flow Cytometry Facility, being responsible for both the Bioimaging and Flow Cytometry Facilities until 2020.
Throughout his career, José has supported and trained hundreds of researchers and collaborated across a broad range of disciplines, including cell biology, immunology, virology, and neuroscience. He has authored more than 40 scientific publications and regularly organizes and teaches courses and workshops in microscopy and flow cytometry. José is currently Head of the Bioimaging Platform and Coordinator of the Scientific Platforms at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM).
