Andreia Santos

Andreia Santos has a BSc in Biology and a MSc in Genetic and Molecular Biology from Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa.

Andreia joined the iMM Flow Cytometry Unit in September 2017 after working at Ana Espada de Sousa’s lab on human T-cell development, namely the role of IL-4 in the lineage plasticity of human CD4 single positive thymocytes.

Andreia is currently a Flow Cytometry Specialist at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine. She is responsible for cell sorting operation and provides training and support to facility users in the independent use of cell sorters and cell analyzers, including troubleshooting and technical guidance. She has a particular interest in developing and optimizing new flow cytometry panels for a wide range of research applications.

Rute Gonçalves

Rute Gonçalves has a BSc in Biochemistry from University of Coimbra and a MSc in Molecular Genetics and Biomedicine from Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

Rute joined the iMM Flow Cytometry Unit in December 2018, after working at the Immunobiology and Pathogenesis Lab at CEDOC. She was also responsible for CEDOC’s Flow Cytometry Facility from April 2018 to October 2018, providing cell sorting services, supporting researchers and performing all the daily equipment maintenance and quality control.

Rute is currently Manager (Lisbon Site) and Flow Cytometry Specialist at the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine, with extensive experience in flow cytometry and high-speed cell sorting, including the operation and troubleshooting of spectral analyzers and image-enabled cell sorters. She supports researchers through all stages of their projects, from experimental design to sample acquisition, data interpretation, and flow cytometry data analysis.

Inês Monteiro

Inês Monteiro began her academic journey at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, where she completed a bachelor’s degree in Biology. During her studies, she gained early research experience in the Differentiation and Cancer group at i3S, focusing on gastric cancer and the m6A mRNA methylation. She later earned a master’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Aveiro. For her dissertation, she studied the role of HMGA1 protein in colon cancer stem cells, developing skills in several molecular and cellular biology techniques.

Currently, she works as a Flow Cytometry Technician at the Champalimaud Foundation, where she supports the flow cytometry platform through cell sorting, data analysis, training, and instrument setup.

FLxFlow Webinar 2026

On the 2026 FLxFlow Webinar, we will have Rui Gardner, PhD, Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, who will explore how imaging-enabled flow cytometry is expanding the capabilities of modern single-cell analysis.

This webinar is particularly relevant for the FLxFlow community, as these cutting-edge imaging flow cytometry technologies are now available within the network through the BD FACSDiscover™ A8 at NOVA Medical School and the BD FACSDiscover™ S8 at GIMM. The session will provide an excellent opportunity to discover the potential of these platforms and learn how they can support innovative research applications.

Date: Thursday, 9 July 2026 | 2:30 PM (Lisbon Time) | Online session

Title: From Images to Insights: Expanding Flow Cytometry Applications with BD CellView™ and FACSDiscover™ Technologies

Speaker:

Rui Gardner, PhD
Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York

Abstract:

The recently developed BD CellView™ Image technology incorporated in the FACSDiscover™ platform has been transformative by merging high-dimensional spectral flow cytometry with imaging collection, enabling researchers around the world to explore further dimensions beyond immunophenotyping, including cell-cell interactions, internalization, co-localization, among others. In this short webinar, we will provide a glance into some of the applications we have been developing within our research institution, including some novel tools for imaging analysis within flow cytometry data.

About the Speaker:

Rui Gardner, PhD is the Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York.

Rui Gardner, began his scientific journey as a mathematical biologist. With a background in Biochemistry, he assumed the role of Head of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in 2007. Overseeing 40+ research groups spanning diverse fields like Immunology, Stem-Cell Biology, Microbiology, and others, Rui brings extensive experience in various Flow Cytometry techniques. His interdisciplinary background in Mathematics, Physics, and Biology allows him to bridge the gap between operational and technical aspects, emphasizing the scientific applications of flow cytometry. Rui is a passionate speaker, having lectured numerous courses on Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting, and actively contributes to organizing workshops and meetings on Flow Cytometry and Core Management in Europe.
